As a digital nomad, you’ll find yourself living in different places with different climates and cultures. Not to mention, the many hours of work you put in online from the comfort of your own home office. So how can you make sure your body is functioning at its best without going insane? It’s important to maintain a balanced lifestyle as we all know! You need time for leisure, quality sleep, socializing and more.
You may think that maintaining a balanced lifestyle is hard to do. However, it’s just a matter of knowing how and when you need to do the right things for your body. It all comes down to making the right choices on a day-to-day basis.
1. Know your limits
Something that is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle as a digital nomad is to know your limits. At the beginning of your career as a digital nomad, it may be hard to know how much time out of your day is suitable for work and how much time you should spend relaxing. As you start your digital nomad journey, it’s important to note how your body is feeling and how many hours of work you are doing on a daily basis. If you start to become stressed, fatigued, or burnt out, it’s important to know when you need a break. You should also be able to tell how long you can stay on your computer before needing a rest or otherwise being distracted. Being aware of yourself and learning about your own limits is essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a digital nomad.
2. Take breaks when you need to recharge or get away from work for a while
It’s also important to take breaks every once in a while. It may be hard to get up from your computer when you’re working on something, but it’s better to take a 5-minute break than not doing anything at all. Staying focused for long periods of time can be difficult, especially if you are working on something not very interesting to you. You can take a brief break by stretching your body or doing small exercises while taking in some fresh air! If you’re feeling burnt out or stressed from work, it’s important that you step away from your computer and do something else for a while.
3. Keep up with your health routine, even when you’re on the go!
When you’re a digital nomad, there will be many times where your health routine will go out the window. You may forget to eat healthy or exercise regularly because you’re always on the go. But it’s very important that you still maintain some sort of routine with regards to your health in order to stay energized and focused. It’s more difficult when you’re traveling around the world, but it’s very possible!
The key to maintaining your health routine is all about staying organized with regards to time management. You need to be as efficient as possible so that you’re not wasting any valuable time. It’s important that you find the best time for each activity and stick with it. Looking at your schedule will help keep you on task and remind you of what needs to be done and when it needs to be done.
4. Be aware of how much time you spend in front of a screen
It’s a fact that we spend way too much time in front of our computer screens, especially when you’re working from home with your own office. Not only is it important to take breaks, but also make sure that you don’t spend too much time on your computer screen at any given time. As a digital nomad, it’s important to make sure that you get out and do something. At least once a week, take the day off from work and explore your new city or socialize with other digital nomads. You’ll be more productive (and less stressed) if you’re making time for yourself.
5. Get enough sleep for yourself and your body’s needs
It’s also important to make time for sleep. As a digital nomad, you will travel to many different places around the world with different times and sleeping schedules. It’s important that you can get a good night’s rest if you are going to be productive on your computer during the day! Allowing yourself 8 hours of sleep each night is crucial and will make a big difference in your productivity.
6. Exercise regularly to stay energized and healthy!
Working long hours every day can be tiring and stressful, especially if you also have to maintain a healthy lifestyle. One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is when it comes to exercising – it’s hard enough maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but being a digital nomad also means balancing your time among different cultures with different sleep schedules. It’s important to set aside at least 20 minutes each day for some form of exercise. You can do this by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or even just going for a jog in your new city. When you’re on-the-go as a digital nomad, it can be difficult to find the time or place to work out. But it’s still important to make sure that you stay active and healthy! To stay energized and healthy, I recommend doing some easy stretches while taking in some fresh air outside.
When it comes time to exercising, make sure that you have planned that time in advance! You can even reserve a certain hour of the day just for your exercise.
7. Eat healthy foods that give you energy (and drink lots of water!)
Eating healthy and drinking lots of water are both extremely important if you want to feel energized. You should do your best to only eat foods that are nutritious, such as lean protein and plants. Processed sugars and oils are not recommended as they will likely make you sluggish! Stay hydrated by drinking lots of filtered tap water every day, as well as coffee or tea.
In order to stay energized throughout the day, it’s important to eat a balanced diet. I find that I’m more productive when I eat healthily and my body doesn’t get weighed down. The more energized I am, the more work I can do! To give yourself a head start:
- Find out what your body thrives on by experimenting with different types of food
- Try to include vegetables in each meal
- Whatever you do, cut out refined sugars and salt from your diet and include good fats and proteins instead
- Drink lots of water! Water is not only essential for your physical health but also for good mental health. It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day.
8. Practice self-care (exercising, taking time for yourself)
It’s important to make time for yourself when you’re on the go. It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of working all day long without taking time for yourself. My favorite way to relieve stress is to go out and do something active, like hiking or yoga, both are great ways to destress from work. It’s so important to take time for yourself in order to have a healthy, balanced lifestyle. If you’re having trouble finding the energy or motivation to go outside and exercise, try doing something low-key like taking a walk around your neighborhood!
I also find meditation very helpful when it comes managing stress levels – when I’m feeling stressed or anxious, I take 10 minutes or so to focus on my breathing and settle down before getting back to work. It’s important to remember that you are not alone in your journey, so try to reach out whenever possible. Make time for friends and family in your life because they will be able to help you cope with these feelings of stress and anxiety.
9. Keep in touch with friends and family who are not digital nomads – it’s important to maintain relationships that don’t revolve around technology!
When I first started traveling, I felt like I wanted to keep in touch with my friends and family all the time because I wanted to feel connected. But then after a few weeks, it was difficult to keep up with everyone. If you find yourself wanting to be social, try to schedule a video chat or call when you’re on Wi-Fi so that you can socialize without worrying about roaming charges. I also like to plan time with my friends and family when I’m back in a single location for a few weeks. It’s important to remember that you are not alone in your journey, so try to reach out whenever possible. Make time for friends and family in your life because they will be able to help you cope with these feelings of stress and anxiety.
10. Make time to have fun!
In addition to all these steps that you should be taking, it’s obvious that you’ll need to take some time for fun. As a digital nomad, you’re abroad in many different places with many different cultures, so it’s important that you make sure that you know your limits. Trying new things and meeting new people is what makes these experiences so amazing. It’s easy to forget that you are travelling and working at the same time, so take some time out of your day to just enjoy what is going around you.
